The TGV was expensive too. It is also mainly used by business man. It is a good alternative for plains. I have promised my son we will go by TGV when he's a bit bigger.
In the Netherlands we have special trains, known as the dog head trains. They are from the 60's and are now unfortunately replaced by newer trains.
At the moment the railways here are under construction. I will try to make some pictures of old and new Dutch trains for you in the future.
As a kid I always loved trains. I think many kids still do. I lived in Vlissingen, which was the end point of trains. The trains are washed here. The train drivers often took me with the trains to the washing construction. It was a great adventure for a kid.
The Japanese trains have always fascinated me. My dad had to work in Japan once. He told me stories about the fast trains.
I have traveled once with the TGV, the fast train in France. It rides over 300 km per hour. It was quite an experience.
